Your Opportunity at SECURE

As an integral part of SECURE’s People & Culture team, the Human Resources (HR) Generalist will work closely with Operational Managers within the Metals Recycling, Mining, and Rail business unit at our Edmonton facility to support all operational and strategic HR needs.

 

The HR Generalist will help to facilitate and consistently improve operational HR strategies related to the employee life-cycle and is accountable for recruitment, onboarding, employee performance management, workplace investigations, risk mitigation, and employee relations and engagement that promotes a transparent and safe environment for all staff.

 

This role is based in Edmonton, Alberta.

A Day in The Life

Overall Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for Business Unit Leaders, building and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders to effectively support talent, people, and organizational needs.
  • Partner with leaders to provide strategic HR guidance across talent acquisition and HR advisory, ensuring the delivery of business unit objectives aligned with overall corporate goals.
  • Drive a continuous improvement mindset by analyzing people-related business processes, interpreting data, and delivering actionable recommendations across recruitment, employee experience, and HR programs.
  • Participates with leaders on annual short and long-term strategic planning, ensuring HR support for the delivery of strategic objectives and alignment with overall business unit objectives.
  • Travel occasionally to remote field locations within Western Canada, as required, to support on-the-ground recruitment, employee relations, and leadership needs.

Talent Acquisition

  • Deliver full-cycle recruitment in partnership with business leaders, sourcing and attracting qualified candidates using resume databases, employee referrals, cold calling, career fairs, social networking, and other innovative sourcing techniques to meet current and future workforce needs.
  • Develop and maintain talent pipelines for critical skill sets and frequently filled positions to support workforce planning and business continuity.
  • Build a deep understanding of business groups, operational capabilities, market challenges, and key skills to create proactive recruitment strategies and act as a trusted advisor to leaders.
  • Oversee and coordinate new hire onboarding in collaboration with leaders and HR partners to ensure a seamless, welcoming, and engaging employee experience that supports early productivity and retention.

HR Advisory

  • Act as a trusted business partner to leaders by bringing a confident, informed perspective to business-critical conversations and decisions, ensuring people considerations are embedded in SECURE’s business outcomes.
  • Administer and advise on core HR programs for the business unit, including employee relations, engagement, compensation, recruitment, learning and development, and performance management.
  • Collaborate closely with the Manager, Strategic Partnering, and the broader Strategic Partnering team to deliver consistent, compliant employee relations guidance in accordance with SECURE policies, Labour and Human Rights legislation, and applicable laws.
  • Conduct workplace investigations, including developing investigation plans, leading interviews, and providing clear, well-supported recommendations aligned with SECURE’s values, guidelines, and policies.
  • Partner with the Health and Safety team to promote SECURE’s safety culture and ensure consistent application of policies and practices to reduce and eliminate safety and environmental incidents.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

The individual in this role will have:

  • A degree and/or diploma in Human Resources or Commerce/Management, combined with 5-7 years of HR Generalist experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in the Metals Recycling, Industrial, Energy, or Waste Management industries is considered an asset for this role.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with multiple leaders, providing effective guidance and respectful challenge where appropriate.
  • Build credibility and trust among employees; resolve employee concerns with compassion and follow through.
  • Proven ability to work with Senior Leaders, as well as the ability to persuade and influence decision makers and key stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively with a local client group and remote HR team.
  • Strong critical thinking with the ability to analyze trends with data and key metrics to propose recommendations.
  • Strong coaching, people, management, conflict resolution, relationship and team building skills, and demonstrated ability to influence.
  • Knowledge of Alberta HR legislation and applications along with demonstrated project management/change management skills
  • Has a continuous improvement mindset with the ability to be resourceful and work both independently and as part of a team.
