Your Opportunity at SECURE

SECURE is currently recruiting for a Driver / Heavy Equipment Operator to join our Metals Recycling team located in Fort McMurray, AB. Prospective individuals will require Equipment Operating experience, preferably with excavator/material handlers and shears. This position would be well-suited to individuals with Forestry, Construction or Oilfield industry experience that want to be working closer to home and have a set schedule and hours of work.


The successful candidate must adhere to our safety program and work as a contributing member of the site team. This role requires utilizing a Heavy-Duty Tandem Lugger Truck occasionally with a trailer.

The Team

The SECURE Metals & Mining team is a group of experienced professionals dedicated to providing innovative and reliable scrap metal recycling services. With a strong focus on safety and customer satisfaction, our team operates across strategically located facilities in Western Canada, offering a full range of services from recycling and clean-up to demolition and surplus scrap metal marketing.

Work Environment

This position is located in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Applicants must be willing and able to work on a rotational work schedule, which may include fly-in & fly-out to site from Calgary or Edmonton. 

A Day in The Life

The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:   

  • Safely operate over dimension/overweight units, in diverse weather and challenging work site environments.
  • Comply with all jurisdictional traffic safety legislation.
  • Inspect transport units and loads for safe operation during, prior to, and after all transport assignments as required by jurisdictional, and / or NSC standards.
  • Ensure load is properly secured at all times.
  • Completion and submission on a timely basis of all documentation as required. This includes logbooks, equipment inspection reports, time tickets, accompanying manifests, trip records, fuel, and credit card receipts.
  • Abide by all company and customer specific safety procedures.
  • Prepare manifests and/or bills of lading, as required, for each transaction.
  • Inspect all material to ensure compliance with manifest, and bill of lading descriptions.
  • Communicate with customer regarding expected onsite arrival and service requirements.
  • Loading and transporting equipment and materials for Metals Recycling.
  • Ensure all transport of hazardous and non-hazardous materials complies with TDG Regulations.
  • Ensure equipment / loads being transported meet all requirements relating to weight and dimension regulations for each jurisdiction traveled.
  • Must be able to work varied shift start and finish times, occasional weekends/overtime and occasionally travel away from home location overnight for project-based

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

The individual in this role will have the following skills: 

Technical

  • Valid and current Class 1 with Q Endorsement Driver’s License is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years driving experience in the transportation industry or demonstrated competency.
  • Solid knowledge base with respect to Hours of Service, load securement and driving regulations.
  • Ability to accurately maintain Log Books, Trip Records and Inspections on a daily basis as per legislated requirements.
  • Ability to conduct proper pre/post trip inspections of transport vehicles for safe operation prior to, during and after transport pickups and deliveries.
  • Strong mechanical knowledge with respect to the maintenance, servicing and repair of transport vehicles.
  • Ability to complete minor servicing and maintenance of transport vehicles, including but not limited to, greasing, replacement of air filters, brake adjustments and settings.
  • Ability to safely operate transport vehicles through difficult weather conditions and challenging work site environments.
  • Prior experience operating heavy equipment (excavators, shears).
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting, shoveling, moving containers and other heavy materials.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work long days and occasional overnights.
  • Fit-for-Work each day. 

Interpersonal

  • Ability to communicate effectively and express thoughts and ideas in a clear manner.
  • Good listening skills along with ability to accept and follow direction.
  • Open and honest with team members as it relates to all aspects of the work.
  • Ability to work alone and cover for supervision when required.
  • Self-starter with the ability to understand operation objectives and can complete tasks with limited supervision.
